No one is going to say no to a dog, you know, to alleviate stress, and, you know, to get a little bit of happiness out of the day, you know. Narrator: Meet Daisy, a feisty, fun-loving one-year-old lab mix who recently became the first official comfort dog at the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. A comfort dog, the best way to explain it is like an animal that you would have around to kind of relieve stress. Narrator: And at the Sheriff’s Office, there can be some stress. After all, our detectives, deputies, crime scene investigators and civilian staff deal with some pretty heavy stuff. Just the presence of animals… it helps with tension, anxiety and overall depression and stuff like that. Narrator: Daisy was originally a family pet, but was turned over to the Brevard County Animal Shelter earlier this year. In Brevard, the Sheriff’s Office runs a program called Paws & Stripes College. And it’s where we take some of our shelter dogs, because here in Brevard County our Sheriff’s Office is over Animal Services. So we get dogs from our shelters and we train them to be comfort and law enforcement therapy dogs. Narrator: Daisy and Jacquelyn went through a week-long training course, so Daisy could get certified as a Comfort Dog. We had to do obedience training with them. And then we had to take them out to public settings. Make sure they were really good with people. Narrator: After Daisy graduated, she was ready for her first day at the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. She has to say hi to everybody and give them face kisses and love on them and everything. She just needs to do that…it’s in her nature. Narrator: On most days, Jacquelyn brings Daisy to Central Operations where the two make their rounds in the building. So far we’ve gotten amazing reactions. Like everybody is really excited to see her. Everyone has been like, “This has made my day so much better.” Narrator: After wandering around the office, Daisy settles in by Jacquelyn’s desk, so Jacquelyn can get some work done. She’s kind of lazy, so…. she’ll nap a lot. Narrator: But don’t let that relaxed work-ethic confuse you. It makes me happy because I can see it’s already making a difference. And this program is already off to a great start. .
