I’m Alexandra Bowmer. I’m a project manager in IT services here at Loughborough University and this is my lovely guide dog Pickle. Pickle is a real star. For me, she is Princess Pickle. I couldn’t do the job that I do half as well without her. My independence is so much greater with her. I feel that I have a sense of freedom that I wouldn’t have just using my white cane. My typical day will consist of a number of meetings but many are scattered across the campus and there are days when I feel like a yo-yo because I’m going to and from. She’s learned an awful lot of routes. Not just the simple getting to and from the office where I’m based but a number of other locations that I need to have in my head whilst I’m getting around the campus day-to-day. In the office I have a comfy bed for her. She has toys and a water bowl that she always has access to and if I’m based in another office for a significant amount of time they’ve even bought her her own water bowl for in there and she also has a bed and toys in that office. So, wherever she goes she’s made to feel welcome and at home. The most important thing for Pickle is to have some down time and playtime during the day as well and she often does get that in the open plan office just outside of the office where I work. So, she has fun at work as well as having the serious side of her job. It’s been a truly liberating experience having a guide dog that’s really as talented as she is.She learns things very quickly and once she’s learnt them she doesn’t seem to need to go over them more than once. So I’m extremely lucky. .
