Now, the Kong can be a really great tool when you’re training a dog, specifically when you’re crate training, but it doesn’t only need to be used for something like that. It’s a great pastime for your dog. We’ll often use them if we’re going on a long trip with our dogs, maybe put something in their crates for them as we’re traveling. Especially if we’re flying and they need to be loaded underneath the plane, we’ll give them a Kong and we’ll put something inside of it so that it’ll just sort of give them that focus and give them a special treat for those types of trips. Now, today’s recipe is a really simple one, but it’s kind of fun. Now, with it being Christmas time, I’m going to add a little bit of green food coloring to some of our dry goods. That’ll give it sort of that Christmas theme. If you’re watching this at any other time other than Christmas, your green food coloring is a little less important. We’re gonna talk with three … It’s really straightforward ingredients. We’re gonna use two rice cakes, they’re plain rice cakes, unsalted. We’re gonna use one cup of cream cheese, and a handful of whole-wheat crackers for our Kong stuffing. First things first, we’re going to cut up our rice crackers and we’re gonna put them into a bowl. Now, you could probably crumble these so that they’re nice, tiny little pieces, but I like to cut them up, because I can really control the size of them and the dexterity of my hands forces me, when I try to do it by hand, to crumble them into little tiny, almost into a dust. So, using the knife will allow me to make little bit bigger chunks, but we’re gonna cut all these up and we’re gonna toss all these dry goods into a bowl. Okay, next up we’re gonna take a few of our crackers. We’ll just cut those up into little tiny strips. And I really like this recipe because it uses healthy ingredients, but it also gives your dog, not only a creamy texture, but a crunchy texture, so when they get some of the crunchy parts out, they can chew away on them and it’s gonna give you a little bit more chewing time, or enjoyment time, for your dog when you can mix things like that creamy texture and that crunchy texture. Now, you can always buy a Kong stuffing, a prepared Kong stuffing, but I’d always prefer to know exactly what we’re giving to our dogs, and something like this, I know exactly what ingredients are going into it, and I know that it’s all healthy.Alright, so we’ve got our dry goods all ready to go. Now is the point when I’m going to add, this is the optional step for you guys. If it isn’t Christmas time, then there isn’t too much sense putting green food coloring in your recipe, but it’s kinda fun. Since it is Christmas I like to take advantage of the opportunity to make it sort of a Christmas-themed Kong stuffing. It would be really great if I had some red as well and if I did, if I had some red food coloring, I would add that to maybe another bowl, and then I could have it looking almost like a candy cane Kong stuffing.I think that would be pretty cool, but for today we’re just gonna use the green. I think it’ll give it that Christmas tree effect. Okay, so we have set our dry ingredients aside. Now I’m just gonna cut up cream cheese a little bit. Now, it’s gonna be easier for me to mix it all if I’ve got, sort of, in these flat little sections. Makes life easier for mixing it in. Now, because we’ve added that food coloring to the dry ingredients, they’re gonna be a little bit mushy, a little bit softer, so I’ve gotta take a little bit more care when I mix these all together that I don’t end up with just a green and white mass.Okay, now all we need to do is add some of our dry goods, our green goods, to our cream cheese, and we’ll just mix it around. Now, we’re gonna have to really work it in a little bit. The cream cheese was a little bit cold when I took it out of the fridge, so if you have a little bit of time to get it up to room-temperature, or at least a little bit warmer, you’re gonna have an easier time mixing all of this. But we just need to get it thoroughly mixed so that there aren’t any spots that are just creamy or just crunchy, because it’s nice to have the combination of the two, and that way your dog can work their way through some of this natural Kong stuffing. Now, if you have a, it depends on what size of dog you have. It sort of dictates the size of Kong, but some of the suggestions on the Kong packages that you’ll see are sort of rules of thumb. Now, we have Deegan, our black lab. I usually go at least one size up or two sizes up with her Kong and I always get her the Kong for tough chewers, because as a lab, you know, they can be really intense chewers, and she will go through a red Kong like this in no time. The other thing you need to keep in mind when you’re giving your dog a toy — if they’ve never had a Kong before, the first time that you give it to them, make sure that you pay attention to what they’re doing.Really supervise them for the first little while they’ve got that Kong, because you don’t really know how they’re going to respond to it, and you’d hate for them to, you know, chew the end, for example, off, because, I know it’s got a hole in the top, but, I mean, that could really present some problems if they were to ingest it. So, really pay attention. It’s not a completely foolproof dog toy, but it can be really handy, as long as you know what to expect from your dog. If you want this to last a little bit longer for your dog, you can always, after you’ve filled the Kong, you can pop the Kong in the freezer for 30 minutes or an hour. It’ll force ’em to consume it a little bit more slowly, but the beauty of this recipe is that I can stuff the Kong full and immediately give it right to my dog, and knowing I’ve given them healthy ingredients. And it’s so simple. Grand Slam sure seems to like it. If this is your first time on the channel, make sure you hit that subscribe button.
