It’s that time of year again when ghouls and ghosts come out for Halloween, and to celebrate the spooky month, residents of San Diego Zoo have been given a special treat. Yes, that’s right, as part of an animal enrichment programme, monkeys and otters at the zoo have been enjoying swamps and pumpkins. Keepers have carved out some of the pumpkins to make it easier for the animals to reach in and dig out the seeds. This allows the cute creatures the opportunity to exercise control of their actions and which items they want to play with. Enrichment is really important to encourage species-specific behaviours. It’s great to give the animals something out of the blue that’s a fun puzzle to figure out, for them to use their mental and their physical abilities.San Diego Zoo also runs a global programme, which aims to bring back species from the brink of extinction. .
