Cat Care Basics – Some Tips To Help You With Your Pet

Cats are unrivaled among animals and can be terrific pets. Cats are beneficial in keeping rodents out of your house, and they are also a lot of fun. They are usually unappreciated heroes that keep many critters away from your home.

Keep drape cords away from cats. Keep the cat away from these cords as they tend to form loops when the cat is playing around, and it could accidentally go around their neck and strangle them. This could kill them. Secure your cords so they are out of the way and out of sight.

TIP! Contact local shelters if you want to adopt a cat. Many shelters have more cats than they can handle and the fees associated with adoption take care of vet visits.

If your cat is female, you need to get it spayed at the proper age. You may believe that this is unnecessary if your cat stays inside all the time; however, cats almost always find a way to get outside, especially when they are in heat. When this occurs, your cat could get pregnant. A spayed cat is a safe cat.

Be sure you have a vet that your cat sees regularly so it stays healthy. They should have a routine check-up once a year or more if important shots are due. Don’t hesitate to take your cat to the vet immediately if you notice anything unusual about their health or if they are injured.

If your cat is outdoors, it needs to have a tagged collar. A lost cat is much easier to locate if they are properly tagged. Make sure at a minimum to put your pets name and your phone number on the tag.

TIP! Older cats will appreciate a heated bed; you can use a heated tile to create one! Heat a fabric covered heating pad in the microwave for a couple of minutes, making sure that is not too hot to the touch. Wrap it in an old towel and put it under your cat’s bed or blanket.

Spray bitter apple on electrical cords. If this does not work, make sure you cover the cords. Hide those loose cords and keep them out of sight in no longer needed paper towel rolls. If you own electronic devices with thin cords, you should keep them out of your cat’s reach when you’re not using them.

Find cat medicine online if you want to get discounts. There may be times when you cannot purchase medication online, such as in an emergency; however, monthly medication, such as flea medicine, can be bought online. But for routine medication purchases, you may find a discount of 50 percent online.

When you purchase a kitten for your child, set rules and boundaries beforehand. Let your children know which rooms their cat can be in. If the cat is to be indoors, tell your children not to allow him outside. You need to establish some clear rules for your pet and ask everyone to follow them.

TIP! Spay your cat as soon as she is old enough. Even if you own an indoor cat, it might produce many kittens if it escapes during mating season.

Talk to people you know about any cat problems you’re having. It’s possible that you could solve the problem on your own, but why deny help from others? The Internet has many cat forums where you can ask your questions, or simply speak with your vet.

Make sure your cat always wears identification tags on their collar. This is necessary even for an indoors pet. Cats are curious creatures, and you never know when they might wander off to explore. They should wear a tag with your vet’s info as well as your telephone number. This will be important especially if you have a cat with medical issues.

Give the cat a collar with your contact information. Even if you have a house cat, there is a chance that he or she may get out. If your cat does get out, make sure that it can get home.

TIP! Be cautious about using canine products on your feline friend. Some can be quite dangerous, and even deadly, when used on a cat.

If you can, keep your cat inside and close to you. Free-ranging cats who spend most of their time outdoors have a shorter lifespan than those that are raised and accustomed to indoor living. Make sure your cat is trained as an indoor cat if you don’t want it to get diseases or other things that can happen when it’s outdoors.

Indoor Cats

You should not let your de-clawed cat outdoors. Your cat cannot defend itself, rendering it helpless against other animals. Indoor cats are the only type of cat that needs to be declawed. With indoor cats, just remove the front claws. Never remove the claws from the back, as these are not harmful to your stuff.

TIP! If your cat is outdoors, it needs to have a tagged collar. Understand that cats may travel a long distance; therefore, if it gets lost, this tag will assist you and others in finding it.

Although cats may not be considered man’s best friend like dogs are, they can make excellent household pets. Cats are great hunters and can make kills more frequently than dogs at times. With these skills and admirable qualities, it is easy to see why cats are a desirable addition to the family.
